Rat Traps are a trusted method of controlling rats and mice, they are easy to set up and work faster than rodenticide alternatives, especially for small and new infestations.
Rat Traps are designed to kill or capture rodents on contact, typically the target rodent will touch a sensitive pedal which activates the kill lever, quickly killing or capturing the rodent. Traps are best placed in tight locations, such as attics or under floors, and for best results they should not be placed in large open or inhabited areas.
The trap captures and kills rats quickly and humanely. Once a rat triggers the pedal, the trap immediately snaps and kills the rat.
Types of Rat Traps
People can use a variety of traps and poisonous baits when removing rats from their homes. Snap traps, electric traps, live traps and glue boards are popular rodent control methods in homes and garages with low mouse populations.
Catch Trap
Catching traps are as old as time. In the past, they were almost always made of wood, but some companies offer modern versions of this ancient trap made of plastic and reusable. The spring clip has a small bait cup that you insert the bait into, then pull the metal rod back 90 degrees (be careful with your fingers!) and the trap is set. When a mouse steps on the plate, it is no longer a problem.

Plastic Closed Snap Trap
They are very similar to regular traps, except they are encased in a hard plastic case, and you use a lever on the outside of the case to set the trap. There is also an indicator when the mouse is captured.
02
Catch Alive Trap
These devices are unique on this list in that they do not kill the rodent; instead, they simply retain it until you can release it elsewhere. There are two main versions of live traps: metal cages and plastic tubes, both equipped with trigger-operated doors. Metal cage traps are preferred because they are large enough that captured rats may not become overly stressed when detained.
03
Electric Trap
Electric traps work by luring rodents into a room and delivering a fatal electric shock. They are growing in popularity because they are one of the more humane options and can kill rats almost instantly. They are also designed to include invisible, no-contact handling procedures, as well as lights to indicate when rodents are caught. Their design also ensures that humans and pets are protected from electrical shock.
04
Glue Trap
Glue traps (glue sheets) are very simple. They are thick industrial cards covered with sticky adhesive. Rats try to walk through it and then get stuck to the sticky surface and die from lack of water and food. The card was then thrown away. We do not recommend using glue traps. They are better at catching rats than rats. Extreme temperatures and dusty areas can reduce their efficiency. Most importantly, they are not an ethical method of rodent control.

What is the best Rat Trap for the outdoors?
While there are several types of rat traps that can be used outdoors, the best type of rodent rat trap is a plastic or metal cage mousetrap. These rat traps are weatherproof and come in different sizes to accommodate different mouse sizes, making them a more user-friendly way to prevent mouse problems.
Here are a few reasons why they are so effective:

Trap design
Most cage rat traps are fairly simple. Place a cage made of wire mesh or plastic around the potential rodent site with a non-toxic bait in the middle. When rats come in to investigate the bait, the cage slams shut behind them, preventing them from escaping and capturing them alive. Some traps may have indicators that let you know if they have been activated, while other traps may catch multiple rats at the same time.
Cage rat traps are designed to be nearly foolproof and difficult to escape. Other rat traps may not trigger but still leave a way for the rat to escape, or if the rat is smart enough, trigger prematurely. Cage rat traps can be adjusted to fit the size of your mouse, so you can catch everything from Norway rats to house mice.

Sturdy and reliable structure
Plastic and metal are the most durable materials for outdoor traps, especially traps made from materials like acrylic plastic or galvanized steel. While they won't withstand extreme weather or climate, these materials are weather-resistant enough to last a decade or more.
Since mice often like to enter homes through dense woods or crowded areas, the durable construction of a plastic or metal cage rat trap ensures they capture these pests before they fail. Other traps may be affected by passing animals, weather or even human activity in the area, which may cause them to activate prematurely.

A more humane method of catching mice
Depending on local regulations, the use of poison or electric mousetraps may be prohibited in your area. This is to avoid accidental harm to local wildlife or pets that may wander through the trapped area and become interested in the bait. Cage mousetraps are usually designed specifically to capture mice to the exclusion of everything else, and most traps will capture mice alive.
Cage traps facilitate the "catch and release" method of trapping and can be effective if there are not many rodents in the area. This also eliminates the issue of carcass recovery and disposal, which can be dangerous as rats are carriers of pests and diseases. The carcasses of dead rats may contaminate the area and attract scavengers, activating other traps.
Why do mice avoid my Rat Traps?
Rats are intelligent animals that are afraid of changes in their environment (opens in a new window). Successful mouse control requires more strategy than a few hastily placed store-bought Rat Traps. Here are a few reasons why Rat Traps don't work:
The wrong size mousetrap: People often make this mistake due to the similar designs of mousetraps and mouse traps. However, the mousetrap is significantly larger and more powerful to make up for the size difference between rats and mice. If you use a mousetrap on a mouse, you run the risk of the mouse escaping or being pinned down, but when you go to release it, it will still be alive and potentially hostile.
Ineffective placement: An important consideration about rats is that they will often move quickly along the edges of a room near walls because that’s where they feel safe. Placing a trap in the middle of a room likely won't catch much. You'll have a better chance of luring mice into the trap if you place the trap on the edge of the room with one end of the trigger plate facing the wall.
Traps set too early: Rats are very aware of their surroundings and will become bored once new elements are introduced. Place traps in the room, but do not set them. This way, rats won't see them as a threat and will be more inclined to approach your traps after a few days.
Not enough traps: In addition to getting the rats accustomed to the traps early, you also need to remember that once the trap proves to be lethal, the rats will stay away. This is why you should always set multiple traps. Statistically, you always catch the most rats on the first night, so by setting up many rats overnight you can greatly increase your odds.
Improper baiting techniques: Rats will chew through new food aggressively and can be quite picky about what they eat. Plus, with a ready food source, rats will eat the bait. Depriving them of their food source for twenty-four hours and using highly desirable bait can help mousetraps perform better.
When selecting and using a rat trap, it is important to consider the following factors:
Safety: Choose a rat trap that does not pose a risk to people or pets in your home.
Effectiveness: Some traps are more effective on certain sizes or species of rats.
Humane: Consider the animal and choose methods that cause the least suffering.
Location: Place the rat trap in areas where mouse activity has been observed, near walls, behind objects, or on the mice's usual routes.
Maintenance: Traps should be inspected and cleaned regularly to maintain their effectiveness.

Where and how to place a rat trap
Placement
Placing the rat trap in the right location is critical to its effectiveness. Here you'll find some good tips on placing them:
Close to walls: Rats tend to move along walls due to poor eyesight. Place the trap parallel to the wall with the activator facing the wall.
High-activity areas: Look for signs of rat presence, such as droppings, bite marks, or worn paths. Place traps in these areas.
Behind objects: Rats feel safer when they are hidden, so place traps behind appliances, furniture, or in dark and secluded spaces.
Near entrances: If you can identify where rats are entering, place traps near those entrances.
In attics, basements, and garages: These are areas that are typically rarely visited by people and pets, making them ideal for placing traps.
Around food sources: near trash cans, pantries, or areas where mice search for food.
Placement Tips
Avoid busy areas: Keep traps out of reach of children and pets to prevent accidents.
Use gloves: Wear gloves when handling traps and bait to avoid transferring human scent to the trap. Human scent will keep rats away from the trap.
Regular Inspections: Traps should be inspected daily. Captured rats should be removed immediately to prevent odors and attracting other animals.
Change location: If the trap doesn't catch anything in a few days, consider moving it to another location.
Use multiple traps: In the event of an infection, placing multiple traps increases your chances of capture.
